Chain Lakes Loop

The Chain Lakes Trail offers hikers a picturesque journey through alpine meadows, alpine lakes, majestic views of Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, and the North Cascades. This guide will help you make the most of your hiking experience on the Chain Lakes Trail.

Location and Accessibility:

This trail is accessible from two separate parking lots:

  • From the Artist Point parking lot: This avoids the steep climbing up of Wild Goose section.

  • From the Heather Meadows parking lot: You will climb the steep Wild Goose section first.

Note: On the way to the parking lot, don’t forget to stop by Picture Lake, where you will get a beautiful view of Mt. Shuksan. If you arrive early in the morning, you have more chance to capture “reflection” photo of Mt. Shuksan:

Preparation:

  1. Permits: $5 day pass is required, unless you already have passes such as Northwest Forest Passes or Interagency Annual Pass
  2. Gear:
    • Sturdy hiking boots
    • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers are recommended)
    • Backpack with essentials (water, snacks, first aid kit)
    • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  3. Food and Water:
    • Carry sufficient water for the hike, as water sources along the trail may be limited.
    • Pack a lunch and snacks to enjoy at one of the scenic viewpoints or lakes.

Throughout the trail, you will get many breathtaking view of Mt. Shukshan. I would say the view at the top of Wild Goose section is the best!
